February is National Children's Dental Health Month + video

By http://www.todaysthv.com - In Medical Monday segment Dr. Josh Leal from Leal Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is talking about National Children's Dental Health Month.

The American Dental Association (ADA) has sponsored the month of February as National Children's Dental Health Month since 1949.

For the past 60 years during the month of February, the ADA tries to inform children about importance of brushing and taking care of their teeth.

So when should your child start seeing a dentist? Dr. Leal suggests either when their first tooth comes in or when they reach one year of age.

To help your child become use to the environment of a dental office, Dr. Leal recommends bringing your baby with you to your own dental appointment.

Good oral hygiene helps to prevent teeth erosion and decay. Many children do not realize how every day teeth cleaning habit can save their dental and overall health.

Usually the first tooth erupts when the child is about six months old. To clean child's first teeth you can use a soft, small, toothbrush.

Toothpaste is not recommended until the age of two and only a small amount should be used after.

Children tend to swallow toothpaste and large amounts of fluoride which is usual additive to each toothpaste can result in a condition that is known as fluorosis or brown to white stains on the teeth.

Until the child is proficient at brushing his own teeth at the age of five-six, brushing should be assisted by the parents.
