Dentists to be rewarded for quality care rather than 'drilling and filling'

Placed by : Dental News Worldwide
17-12-2010

By hi-mag.com - Dentists will be paid according to the quality of care they deliver to patients, rather than for the amount of "drilling and filling" they undertake, under a new government contract designed to rewards a focus on preventative care.

The contract, which will first be piloted in around 50-60 areas throughout England in April, will be based on capitation, registration and quality. This means that dentists will be rewarded for registering patients, encouraging the formation of long-term relationships, the number of patients they provide care for (weighted according to the needs of these patients) and the quality of the care they deliver. There will be a particular focus on improving the oral health of schoolchildren, with dentists rewarded financially for preventing decay in this group.

The contract will replaced the much-maligned 2006 dentist contact which saw many patients lose access to an NHS dentist. An independent review of NHS dentistry by Professor Jimmy Steele published last year found that people had lost faith in being able to access the service and that the contract failed to incentivise high quality and preventative care.

Health Minister Lord Howe said: "We want to give dentists the freedom to deliver high quality care and reward them for the outcomes they achieve for their patients, not just for the volume of treatment delivered, as is the case now.

"This is about prioritising prevention. People need a dental service that helps them maintain good oral health and prevents decay, rather than one that is based solely on treatment.

"It is important that we get this absolutely right so that our reforms will give dentists the encouragement they need to provide a service that meets the needs of today's population."
