Short ways, big action – Interaction Korea Tour
12 / 2009 – As announed in October, this is a brief account of ZTM Hans-Jürgen Joit’s trip to Korea on behalf of Elephant Dental. Despite the full programme of lectures and workshops every day, there can be only one conclusion – the objective of demonstrating and promoting the effective layering of Interaction was amply achieved.

The Korean Interaction Center
The tour began in the course room at the headquarters in Seoul, the ‘Interaction Center’. The first day, and all the days in between, saw a new group of dental technicians, eager to learn and eager to apply themselves to the task, intent on catching every detail. After each successful preparation involving a Sakura crown on ZrO2 and an Antagon crown on a non-precious metal alloy, the master dental technician awarded the students a certificate and a map with the layering diagram.

University of Seoul On the second day, the opinion leader visited the modern, well-equipped university of Seoul. Thanks to well-planned prior publicity, 150 highly motivated participants filled the auditorium. The audience leaned forward in anticipation, listening intently. But as soon as Hans-Jürgen Joit started demonstrating the layering with the help of a camera on the projection screen, there was no holding the audience back. They even climbed up onto the rostrum to get close to where the work was going on so that they could see and feel everything at close quarters. At the end almost everyone got up onto the stage, raising their mobile phones to capture the scene many times over for posterity .

Gaon Dental Hospital The next stop was a course at the Gaon Dental Hospital in Cheonan City. To the opinion leader’s great surprise, a professional video team was waiting at the entrance to the underground car park, with Dr Kim, the clinic manager, and they accompanied the group all day long. Gaon Dental Hospital is a modern, high-tech private clinic with its own laboratory and eight dental technicians. Given the quality of the clinic’s products – a large number of inplants and several exceptional preparations were on view – the workshop was top-notch.

Dong-U Dental College
In the days following, various courses were held at the Interaction Center in Seoul, until it was time for the last lecture at the Dong-U Dental College in Sokcho City. The Dong-U Dental College is an impressive school full of young, good-humoured and interested dental technicians .

In contrast to German dental techhnology courses, Korea only started teaching morphology a few years ago. The course leader was pleased with this, as this technology is fairly easy to handle and learn thanks to a pre-defined outcome. However, morphology is the essence of the work and an essential condition if restorations are to fulfil the same function as a natural tooth. Because this training takes place in the first years already, an excellent foundation is created for restoration competence, the opinion leader believes.

Carried away
During the guided tour, professor Kim, the head of Dong-U College, was found to be an excellent host, and, like Hans-Jürgen Joit, an assiduous collector of beautiful photos of workpieces and specialist literature. After the tour, young technicians demonstrated the workpieces they had made on completion of their studies. The youthfulness, ease and love of their profession show through their work and that really got the opinion leader carried away! After having had numerous photographs taken, the final shot was made in tae kwon do style.

As always – especially if you encounter so much sympathy in a foreign country – you leave behind a bit of your heart and look forward to the next meeting. As far as Elephant Dental and Hans-Jürgen are concerned, this Interaction Tour was a resounding success.

Kamsamida Mr Kim, Kamsamida Korea!
