BruxStop® active therapy for the treatment of bruxism

Placed by : BruxStop®
06-02-2007

The BruxStop® is a new CE approved therapeutic device for the treatment of nocturnal bruxism on the basis of biofeedback during the sleep. The largest advantage in contrast to comparable systems is that neither the patient nor his/her partner in bed is awakened by the emitted stimulus.

The efficacy of the device is based upon the detection of masticatory muscle activity and the administration of very small electric pulse when the measured muscle activity fulfils certain conditions. (Among others the conditions consist of the exceeding of a threshold value for the muscle activity and a minimum duration of 2.5 seconds of this muscle activity).

The mechanism of action is as follows: the small electrical pulse ensures that there is a muscle relaxation by eliciting a mouth opening reflex. This is how the BruxStop® interrupts the activity of the masticatory system muscles, and therefore the bruxing activity. The electrical pulse is so small that the patient does not awake from this.

The continuously repeated interruption of the bruxing activity results in a strong reduction of tooth wear and complaints as headaches, jaw-aching, neck complaints and fatigue. In the long term a possible cure of bruxism can be expected, based on current experiences.
