Straumann® Emdogain Straumann BV

Emdogain® found its beginnings over a decade ago, when a breakthrough in the knowledge of the basic biology of tooth development revealed a native complex of enamel matrix proteins and the key role they play in the development of tooth-supporting tissues.

By mimicking the biological processes of natural tooth development, Emdogain forms an insoluble three dimensional matrix, which allows for the selective colonization of cells. Through cellular interactions, a cascade of events initiates increased cell proliferation, growth factor synthesis and cell differentiation resulting in the formation of necessary hard and soft tissues such as cementum, periodontal ligament and alveolar bone.

Safety
To date, no adverse effects in professional clinical use or in clinical studies have been attributed to the use of Emdogain®.

Efficacy
In more than 40 clinical studies, involving 1500 intrabony periodontal defects in 1200 patients, Emdogain has been proven to be effective in stimulating the formation of new periodontal attachment in:
• soft tissue measured as clinical attachment gain and probing pocket depth reduction.
• hard tissue - evidence of new alveolar bone observed in radiographs.
Clinical studies have demonstrated an average of 60-70% defect fill measured as a gain of radiographic bone one year following treatment with Emdogain.

Straumann®
Indication Straumann® Emdogain
Recession Defects:
Treatment of recession defects continues to be a growing focus of periodontal care. Today's patients want more than just relief from root sensitivity - they want superior esthetics.

As an adjunct to coronally advanced flap surgery, Emdogain® offers a biology-based solution that restores esthetics and provides potential for re-growth of lost periodontal tissues.

Intrabony Defects:
Emdogain® is a resorbable, implantable material, which consists of hydrophobic enamel matrix proteins with a unique biomimetic effect that promotes predictable re-growth of specific hard and soft tissues within the oral cavity.

Emdogain is intended as an adjunct to periodontal surgery as a topical application onto exposed root surfaces.

Clinical studies on intrabony defects, including 1-, 2- and 3-wall defects have demonstrated an average of 60-70% defect fill measured as gain of radiographic bone one year following treatment with Emdogain as well as significant gain in clinical attachment.

Class II mandibular furcation with minimal interproximal bone loss:

For many clinicians, the treatment of class II mandibular furcation defects has long involved time-consuming treatment techniques, problematic post-surgical healing and inconsistent long term results.

Emdogain® offers a simplified treatment option that shortens surgical time and recreates lost periodontal tissues. Clinicans have reported improved wound healing and patients have reported minimal pain and swelling after Emdogain treatment.

Note: Indication approved in the U.S. is for class II mandibular furcation defects with minimal interproximal bone loss.
